Frederick Rickard Sr.

Frederick is 84 years old and like most people his age, he grew up following the traditional Cree way of life of hunting and trapping on the land. He is a fluent Cree speaker and has seven children and 14 grandchildren and two great-grand children.

He is also the traditional hunting boss or “okimah” of his family and the territory that they hunt on. As a respected leader, his responsibilities come from a long line of historical knowledge and customs that has been passed on from generation to generation. Recently, Frederick has passed on that responsibility to his youngest son, Darryl.

Frederick spends most of his time at the camp these days but he does venture out to the hunting blinds on various occasions. He is a storyteller and loves to share his knowledge of the land, weather and animals with everyone.
